How Does A Gold Mining Dredge Work?Ī gold dredge is powered by a gas engine or electric motor and uses a suction hose to suck up gold-bearing sand, gravel, and dirt from the bottom of a river or stream. They are particularly well suited for working in remote areas where other mechanized equipment is not practical. They have been used successfully in a wide variety of gold-bearing environments worldwide. Today, most gold dredges are relatively small and can be operated by one or two people with little experience. Small suction machines are currently marketed as “gold dredges” to individuals seeking gold: just offshore from the beach of Nome, Alaska, for instance. The original gold dredges were large, multi-story machines built in the first half of the 1900s.
